The Project
Federico Romano came to Golden Ratio having already used them on a previous property — a strong vote of confidence before the brief was even discussed. The job this time centred on his Victorian house in North London: reproduce the original sash windows across the front elevation, keeping the period character of the property intact while upgrading to a more durable, modern construction. Victorian terraced houses in North London typically feature bay window arrangements at ground floor level alongside additional sash windows on the upper floors, and this property was no different — a configuration that demands precise joinery if the proportions and glazing bar patterns are to read as authentic.
The customer's priority was clear: the new windows should look like the originals, not like a compromise. This ruled out standard off-the-shelf units, which rarely match the moulding profiles, sash weight proportions, or glazing configurations found in genuine Victorian properties. Bespoke manufacture from the outset was the only route that would achieve the result Federico was after.
The Work
Golden Ratio manufactured each window from scratch in timber, replicating the original glazing patterns, sash proportions, and joinery detailing of the Victorian originals. The bay window at the front of the property — one of the defining features of this style of house — was rebuilt with multi-light sashes that match the surrounding streetscape. Particular attention was given to the window furniture: the fitch fasteners, sash lifts, and pulley mechanisms were all specified to period-appropriate quality, and Federico notes they feel solid and work smoothly in use. A custom-made door was also produced as part of the same commission, completing the front elevation as a unified composition.
The finished result transformed the appearance of the property. As Federico puts it, the whole front of the house looks much better, with the careful detailing accentuating the Victorian character rather than diluting it. Our sash window replacement service is built around exactly this kind of exacting reproduction work — carried out by joiners who understand how Victorian construction is meant to look and feel.

Why Bespoke Rather Than Off-the-Shelf?
Victorian sash windows are rarely interchangeable with standard modern units. The original proportions, glazing bar arrangements, and moulding profiles vary by era, area, and even individual street — meaning a stock replacement almost always produces a visual mismatch that undermines the character of the property. On a North London Victorian terrace, where the uniformity of the street is part of the appeal, windows that don't match the neighbours stand out immediately and can affect both kerb appeal and market value.
Bespoke manufacture allows the glazing bars, sash weights, moulding profiles, and overall proportions to be replicated exactly. The joinery team at Golden Ratio works from measurements and reference photographs taken on site, so the finished units are built specifically for the opening they're going into — not adapted to fit. For period properties across North London and the wider city, this is the approach that produces a result homeowners are genuinely proud of. Federico has now trusted Golden Ratio with two properties, and has recommended the company to family members who have been equally happy with the outcome.
"I have used Golden Ratio for two properties now and wanted to provide a review given how pleased I have been with the sash windows constructed and installed by Golden Ratio Windows Joiners. The windows attached show the front of my Victorian house in North London which GR reproduced the original sash windows and detailed joinery, but with a modern and robust finish. The detailing is very well done and accentuates the property nicely. The windows feel solid and well made, and the window furniture in particular feels good quality and works smoothly. Overall, the finish is excellent and the whole front of the house looks much better as a result. GR have always been easy to work with and have ensured that the installation meets the high standards of the windows. We have recommended Golden Ratio Windows Joiners to family and they have been happy with the custom windows (and door that was customed made too)."
