Handcrafted Traditional Shutters for London Period Properties
Original Victorian and Georgian homes were built with internal folding timber shutters as standard. They provided privacy, thermal insulation, security, and a layer of craftsmanship that off-the-shelf blinds and curtains simply cannot replicate. Many London properties have lost their shutters over the years — or never had them reinstated after renovation.
At Golden Ratio Windows, we manufacture bespoke folding shutters custom-profiled to match your exact window reveals, architrave details, and the period architecture of your property. Every panel is built by hand in our workshop — not purchased off a shelf and trimmed to fit.

Why Off-the-Shelf Shutters Don't Work in Period Homes
Standard plantation shutters are designed for modern, square window openings with uniform reveals. Victorian and Georgian sash windows are anything but standard — reveals vary, architraves have complex profiles, and the window itself may not be perfectly square after 150 years of settlement.
Off-the-shelf shutters fitted into period reveals either leave visible gaps at the edges, require the original architrave to be removed, or operate stiffly because the panels aren't sized correctly. Our joinery-grade approach solves all of this by building every panel to your exact measurements with profiles that complement — not conflict with — your original timber details.
- Custom panel sizes — no gaps, no trimming
- Profiles matched to your existing architraves
- Out-of-square openings accommodated
- Original shutter boxes retained and used where present
- Full sash window operability maintained
Timber Choices for Your Shutters
We manufacture shutters in two primary timber species:
Accoya® (Recommended)
Our top recommendation for shutters. Accoya® is a modified softwood that is exceptionally dimensionally stable — it doesn't swell or shrink with changes in humidity. This is critical for folding shutters, which need to operate and close precisely throughout all four seasons. Carries a 50-year anti-rot warranty and is sustainably sourced. Approved by leading conservation bodies.
Oak
Premium natural hardwood. Heavier and denser than Accoya®, oak is specified when the client wants the warmth and grain of natural timber visible in the finished piece. Particularly suited to properties where an oiled or waxed natural finish is desired rather than painted.
All shutters are finished in your choice of colour or natural oil. We can match existing paintwork or period-correct paint palettes.
Restoring Lost or Damaged Original Shutters
Many London Victorian terraces still have their original shutter boxes — but the panels themselves have been lost, boxed in, or damaged beyond use. We specialise in replicating lost shutters to match whatever survives in the property.
If one room still has original panels, we can profile-match every detail — the moulding, the fielded panel depths, the hinge style, the meeting stile profile — and replicate them for other rooms. The result is indistinguishable from the originals.
Where shutters survive but are damaged, we carry out full restoration: stripping, timber repairs, hinge replacement, and redecoration.

Traditional Sash Shutter FAQs
-
Can you make shutters to match my original Victorian sash windows?
Yes — this is our core service. We take detailed measurements from your existing window reveals, architrave profiles, and any surviving original shutter panels to replicate the design exactly. Every panel is custom-profiled and built to match the period architecture of your property. If you have original shutters in one room, we can profile-match them for the entire house.
-
What timber do you use and why?
We primarily use Accoya® and oak. Accoya® is our recommendation for shutters because it is exceptionally dimensionally stable — it doesn't swell or shrink with seasonal humidity changes. This is essential for folding shutters that need to close precisely year-round. It also carries a 50-year anti-rot warranty. Oak is available for clients who prefer the natural grain of hardwood in an oiled or waxed finish.
-
Will the shutters stop me from opening my sash windows?
No — all our shutters are engineered to fold fully back into the shutter box or flat against the window reveals, leaving the sash windows completely unobstructed. Full window operability is maintained at all times. This is a core requirement we design every installation around.
-
Do I need planning permission for internal shutters?
Internal timber shutters typically do not require planning consent in Conservation Areas or Listed Buildings, as they make no alteration to the external appearance of the property. We advise on any specific requirements during your free site survey, and we recommend checking with your local London borough council if you are in a listed building.
-
Can you restore original shutters that are still in the property?
Yes — if your original shutters survive but are damaged, stiff, or in poor condition, we carry out full restoration: stripping, timber repairs, hinge replacement, and redecoration. We always restore where possible rather than replacing, to preserve the original fabric of your property.
-
What if my original shutter boxes are still present but the panels are missing?
This is very common in London Victorian terraces. We can manufacture new panels to fit your existing boxes exactly. If you have surviving panels elsewhere in the house, we profile-match them. If not, we design period-appropriate panels based on the style of your property and the dimensions of the box.
-
How long does it take to get bespoke shutters made?
Lead time from order to installation is typically 6–10 weeks depending on the complexity of your specification and current workshop load. We give you a clear timeline at the survey stage. Installation itself is usually completed in one to two days.
-
What areas of London do you cover?
We cover all of Greater London.
