The working hardware on a sash window: the parts you handle every day, and the parts hidden in the frame that keep it balanced.
A sash window has four main pieces of ironmongery. A sash fastener locks the two sashes together, a finger lift gives you something to grip when raising the lower sash, a sash stop limits how far a sash can open, and a pulley carries the sash cord inside the frame.
Each is available in four finishes — satin chrome, polished chrome, polished brass and antique brass — so the hardware can be matched to the property. The numbered photo below shows where each one sits on the window.
Watch: the four finishes
Fixed where the two sashes meet, it locks them together. Ours are Altro Heavy Duty 14mm Narrow Locking Fitch fasteners, 69 x 14mm.
Fitted to the bottom rail of the lower sash, it gives you a firm grip for raising the window by hand.
The Bramah Rola wooden sash window stop is made up of bodies and inserts, and is operated with a key.
Set into the frame, the pulley carries the sash cord over a 44mm curved metal wheel, so the sash runs smoothly.

A sash fastener is fixed where the two sashes meet and locks them together. The Altro Heavy Duty 14mm Narrow Locking Fitch fastener measures 69 x 14mm.
Fitch is the traditional pattern of sash fastener, fitted across the meeting rail of a sash window to lock the upper and lower sashes together.
The pulley is set into the frame and carries the sash cord over a wheel, so the sash can be raised and lowered smoothly. Ours have a 44mm curved metal wheel.
